Are Republican leaders indirectly funding Gore?

According to both the House and Senate subcommittees for Labor and Health and Human Services, Congress will soon finalize its decision regarding next year's proposed $35 million increase for family planning (Title X). Both subcommittees expect a resolution within a week.

"It is incredible that the so-called pro-life leadership in Congress would even contemplate caving in to the lame duck Clinton regime on this matter," said Ed Szymkowiak, national director of STOPP International, a project of American Life League. STOPP estimates that Planned Parenthood will receive about $7 million dollars of the $35 million increase, bringing its total Title X share to about $52 million.

Planned Parenthood uses this money to distribute abortifacient products that kill babies during their first week of life.

"This increase will just about cover the more than $7 million Planned Parenthood spent promoting Al Gore during the presidential campaign. You would think Republicans would remember this and cut, rather than increase, funding to Planned Parenthood, " Szymkowiak said. "This is a domestic replay of the same spineless retreat Congress made in October when it upped international family planning funding by $40 million."

STOPP is urging Americans to contact Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert (202-225-0600) and Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott (202-224-3135), also a Republican. "Let them know that you are appalled that they are letting the Clinton administration dictate another Title X increase. Ask them to cut funding to Planned Parenthood by reducing Title X appropriations instead," said Szymkowiak.
