Planned Parenthood annual report shows business in decline, after receiving almost 1/2 billion dollars in government funding

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) just released its annual report for 2009-2010. Predictably, it reflects a general decline in the abortion giant’s business, thanks to unprecedented pro-life activism from the grassroots up, focused directly on Planned Parenthood.

** Additionally, Planned Parenthood announced it will be receiving new government grants of $22 million in FY2011 (the current year) for more “Teen Pregnancy Prevention” programs.

First decline in abortion business in 16 years

Despite its increased emphasis on its abortion business, for the first time in 16 years PPFA reported a very slight decline in the number of abortions it committed. Abortions in the fiscal year ending in mid-2010 showed a .7 percent decline. The abortion giant killed 329,445 preborn babies in 2010, compared to the 2009 total of 331,796. PP commanded 27.2 percent of the national abortion market in 2010, down slightly from the previous all-time high of 27.4 percent in 2009.

Though abortion numbers were slightly down, estimated abortion income was up, based on an increase in the average cost of abortion. We estimate that Planned Parenthood’s 329,445 abortions grossed $164,722,500 in blood money, up from $162,580,040 in 2009.

Number of children aborted by Planned Parenthood rivals the population of the Washington Metropolitan area

Cumulative abortions committed by Planned Parenthood now stand at 5,649,058, according to its own reports. This is a number slightly higher than the entire population of the Washington Metropolitan area, which focuses on Washington, DC, and includes all of the federal district and many densely populated parts of adjoining Maryland and Virginia.

Planned Parenthood’s cumulative abortion income is estimated to be $2.06 billion, as calculated by STOPP, based on Planned Parenthood’s annual reports dating back to 1970 when it committed its first abortions.

Number of affiliates down

The number of Planned Parenthood affiliates continued to decline from the 1977-1978 all-time high of 191. At the close of the fiscal year in mid 2010, PP reports it had 88 affiliates, operating 840 facilities.

STOPP research shows that by the end of January 2011, Planned Parenthood had only 86 affiliates operating 785 centers. This decline in facilities can be directly attributed to unprecedented grassroots activism directly targeting Planned Parenthood facilities, and attacks on government funding.

Government funding accounts for 46.5 percent of Planned Parenthood’s income; $1.3 million per day

We have long known that Planned Parenthood receives more government income than it was reporting under its “government grants and programs” heading. With the 2010 annual report, it changed its method of reporting income to more truthfully reveal the extent of its government funding. With the change in reporting, we find that 46.5 percent of its revenue came from government sources in 2010. That’s up dramatically from the 33 percent it reported as government grants and programs income in 2009.

It is difficult to track, however, an exact amount of change in the government funding between 2009 and 2010, since prior to 2010 Planned Parenthood was hiding its Medicaid income by co-mingling it with other clinic income under that “clinic income” heading. What we do know is that the abortion giant received a total of 487.4 million dollars in government revenue in 2010. That’s $1.3 million dollars per day, each and every day of the year, for a total of almost a half billion dollars.

Planned Parenthood’s growing reliance on government funding is truly its Achilles heel. Cutting substantial amounts of government funding will result in its collapse. The current breakdown of its revenue includes 31 percent non-government clinic revenue, 21 percent private contributions and bequests, 2 percent “other,” and 46.5 percent government funding.

Planned Parenthood prenatal services drop 23 percent; adoption referrals down 13.9 percent

Planned Parenthood also changed its method of reporting prenatal care in the 2010 report. It previously reported prenatal clients, but has now switched to reporting prenatal “services,” ostensibly to make it appear it is doing more to help women who choose to bring their babies to term. However, in showing the 2010 prenatal business numbers, it reveals the 2009 figures. It says that in 2009 it provided 40,489 prenatal services, while in 2010 it provided 31,098 prenatal services, a 23 percent decrease.

Looking at the abortion to prenatal care ratio, we find that Planned Parenthood committed 10.5 abortions for every prenatal service it provided in 2010.

In 2009, the average prenatal service client received 5.76 “services.” That can be carried forward to calculate that, in 2010, Planned Parenthood provided “prenatal services” to approximately 5,398 clients. That means that Planned Parenthood now commits approximately 69 abortions for every one prenatal care client.

Planned Parenthood’s adoption referrals dropped to 841 in 2010, down 13.9 percent from 2009. Planned Parenthood now commits 392 abortions for every one adoption referral.

Planned Parenthood sells abortion to 98.14 percent of women seeking pregnancy related care

Does Planned Parenthood really represent the voice of choice? How many women seeking pregnancy related care at Planned Parenthood are sold abortions?

Taking into consideration the fact that Planned Parenthood provided prenatal services to a mere 5,398 women and adoption referrals for only 841 women, while PP committed 329,445 abortions, 98.14 percent of the women seeking pregnancy related care at Planned Parenthood are now sold abortions—up from 97.6 percent in 2009.

Abortion is 51.5 percent of Planned Parenthood's clinic income

Planned Parenthood continues to claim that abortion is three percent of its services in the 2010 report. By comparing the number of condoms, birth control pills, and other low cost items distributed to the number of abortions it commits, Planned Parenthood intentionally misleads the public and those in charge of providing government funding for its grisly business by painting a grossly inaccurate picture of what its business is all about.

By comparing PP’s abortion income with its clinic income, we get a much more accurate picture of Planned Parenthood’s business model. In 2010, Planned Parenthood’s abortion income was 51.5 percent of its clinic income.

It’s time to stop government funding to Planned Parenthood

One of the cornerstones of STOPP’s plan to stop Planned Parenthood has always been to cut off its government funding. Planned Parenthood’s 2010 annual report underscores its growing reliance on government funding. Elimination of that funding will result in the collapse of the abortion giant. Government funding for Planned Parenthood must be attacked on local, state, and federal levels.
