American Life League's Annual Survey of Planned Parenthood Facilities for 2007

Summary

The Planned Parenthood Federation of America is the largest and richest affiliate of the International Planned Parenthood Federation. PPFA is comprised of a number of affiliates within the United States. Each of these affiliates operates a number of facilities that dispense contraception and commit abortions. Each year, American Life League conducts a nationwide survey to determine the exact number and types of facilities operated by each of the PPFA affiliates. The total number of PP affiliates as of December 5, 2007 is 108. This is a decrease of nine affiliates since last year.

We are happy to report that the number of PP clinics has also dropped -- from 859 to 855 during 2007. Of the 855, 41 are express clinics, leaving 814 non-express clinics.

The 855 clinics are located in 49 states and the District of Columbia. There are no PP clinics in the state of North Dakota. 21 of these clinics are only open one day per week.

It is important to report that PP has increased the number of facilities providing medical and surgical abortions. It now has 287 facilities that commit medical or surgical abortions. Of these clinics, 179 commit surgical abortions and 108 commit only medical abortions. The total number of facilities that offer only medical abortions has doubled since 2006.

Here is a quick glance at some of the survey numbers:

Number of PPFA affiliates: 108

Number of PPFA clinics: 855

Number of states with PPFA medical facilities: 49 + D.C.

Total number of Planned Parenthood express clinics: 41

Total number of Planned Parenthood non-express clinics: 814

Types of Planned Parenthood clinics

Planned Parenthood kills our children and hurts women through abortions. There are three types of abortion: chemical, medical and surgical. PP commits abortions at every single one of its 855 clinics.

Clinics that provide chemical abortions are clinics which sell birth control products that work a certain percentage of the time by preventing implantation of an already created human being. Examples include Plan B, the birth control pill, the birth control patch and injectables. All PP clinics offer birth control.

  • Clinics that commit chemical and medical abortions are clinics that use products such as RU-486 to kill babies after implantation. This may require three visits to the PP facility to insure the baby is dead and has been removed from the mother’s body. At times, a surgical abortion may be done on the mother if the baby is not completely removed.

  • Clinics that commit chemical, medical and surgical abortions are clinics that offer birth control products and medical abortion drugs, and are equipped with tools and instruments to perform surgical abortions. Examples of surgical abortion procedures include vacuum aspiration and dilation and evacuation.

  • Express clinics provide limited expedited services. PP says, "At an express health center, clients who are short on time and do not require a table examination can quickly pick up their birth control medication or get contraceptive advice."

Below is an image of the Map Key that is used on the American Life League's Map Room: Activism Against Planned Parenthood web site. The key indicates different colored markers that represent the various types of PP clinics. To view the exact location and type of each PP clinic in the United States, visit the American Life League's Map Room web site at www.all.org/stopp/maps.

Openings and closings during 2007

It was clear that Planned Parenthood was very aggressive in opening new facilities in 2007. We added a total of 25 clinic sites in 15 states to our list.

However, STOPPers have been even more aggressive. We noted that 29 PP facilities in 15 states have closed their doors. PRAISE GOD! The most activity took place in the state of Michigan, where PP tried very hard to expand its presence by opening five new clinics. However, four of these are only open one day per week in county health department buildings. In 2007, PP closed seven clinics in Michigan and thus had a net loss of two clinics.

Conclusion

2007 has been another difficult year for Planned Parenthood. It began with a total of 859 clinics and ended with 855. Of these 855, 814 are non-express clinics. This is the lowest number since 1986.

As the national organization that focuses on grassroots efforts to defeat PP, we are making plans to increase our efforts in 2008. We ask for your continued support as we work together to defeat Planned Parenthood.

Visit our web site at www.all.org/stopp/maps to view the complete listing of all PP facilities across the country and each peaceful protest that is taking place at a PP facility. We are here to assist you and encourage you to join the fight.

May God inspire you to be His instrument of peace as we look to close more Planned Parenthood clinics in 2008.
