Feast of the Incarnation

Today is March 25. It is exactly nine months from today until Christmas. The Christian world marks this day to commemorate and celebrate Jesus Christ taking up residence inside Mary. He will remain there for the next nine months as He goes through all the stages of development that every human being has in common. For Jesus truly became human in every way—except sin.

In many Christian religions, today is celebrated as the Feast of the Annunciation, the time when the Angel Gabriel appeared to Mary and informed her that she had been chosen to be the virgin mother of the Savior—Jesus Christ. The angel answered Mary’s questions and, when she said, “Be it done to me according to your word,” Jesus entered her as the smallest of human beings. He was incarnate (embodied in flesh; in human form).

As the website, Catholictv.org, points out: “Significantly, the Annunciation acknowledges that God did not become man only at the Nativity, but was man from the very moment of conception. This is well reflected in the most recent translation of the Nicene Creed found in the Roman Missal, 3rd Edition: we no longer say that the Son was ‘born of the Virgin Mary and became man,’ but that He was ‘incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.’ The importance we attach to this feast day is a good reminder of why we defend the dignity of life from conception.”

Thus, this feast day is of particular importance to the pro-life movement. We know that Jesus did not suddenly appear on earth as a 30-year-old man and begin preaching. Rather, He came as all of us come, residing in His mother from conception to birth— slowly growing His human body.

Although there has always been and will always be just one Jesus, we must remember that every preborn child is created by God. Every preborn child needs the existence of already-born human beings to guide him or her through the nine months inside his or her mother and to bring him or her into this world.

As we celebrate the Feast of the Incarnation, let us renew our efforts to end all abortion and close down every Planned Parenthood facility.
