Planned Parenthood abandons its Jewish supporters

It is a new year, Planned Parenthood Federation of America has a new president, but it is again clear that Planned Parenthood is wedded to its abortion business—even at the expense of some of its wealthier donors.

Two years ago, the day after the inauguration of Donald Trump, the pro-abortion women in the country held a major rally—the Women’s March. Although billed as an “inclusive” event open to all women, several pro-life women’s groups that tried to join the event were denied participation. The Women’s March was the idea of some women across the country, but was quickly co-opted by Planned Parenthood, NOW, and other aggressively pro-abortion groups. 

The Women’s March was held again in 2018. Although significantly smaller in size than the original, it served as a rallying point, and Planned Parenthood and NOW were, once again, in the forefront.

As a recent New York Times article documented, from its beginning, the people leading the Women’s March were involved in charges of anti-Semitism. One of the original women involved was Jewish, but felt she was edged out of leadership functions because of her faith. She did not make a big public issue of it, as she was more interested in seeing the Women’s March succeed.

As preparations were being made for the 2019 Women’s March, a major rift, which had been brewing for two years, developed in the movement. The charges of anti-Semitism became public and caused quite a bit of backlash. The issue prompted a feature article in Tablet Magazine. The evidence became so overwhelming that a number of groups began disassociating from this year’s Women’s March. 

According to published reports: National Organization for Women’s Baton Rouge chapter posted to the New Orleans Women’s March event on Facebook that they were cancelling the demonstration; the Washington State chapter of the Women’s March announced its decision to disband; and the National Organization for Women announced it “will withhold direct financial support until the current questions regarding leadership are resolved.” 

The New York Timesarticle mentioned above reported that “there will be two marches on the same day next month on the streets of New York: one led by the Women’s March group, which is billed as being led by women of color, and another by a group affiliated with March On that is stressing its denunciation of anti-Semitism.” 

In the midst of all this controversy, Planned Parenthood issued a statement of support for The Women’s March. In the statement to Refinery29, Erica Sackin, senior communications director for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said: "Over the last two years, we’ve seen unprecedented attacks on our health and rights from the Trump-Pence administration. The Women’s March has become a symbol of our collective resistance to these damaging and discriminatory policies and Planned Parenthood is proud to once again, join our progressive partners for the #WomensWave mobilization to protect and advance the progress we've made as a movement dedicated to equity and justice for all people.”

Although Planned Parenthood seeks to divert attention from the charges of anti-Semitism against the Women’s March leaders, this is disingenuous. One of the big supporters of Planned Parenthood is the National Council of Jewish Women. It’s CEO, Nancy K. Kaufman, wrote an article in 2015 stating Why Supporting Planned Parenthood is a Jewish Issue. The Jewish Community Foundation of San Diego (CA), just last November, brought donors on a tour and site visit of Planned Parenthood, saying it was a “great opportunity to network and learn about a wonderful organization.” Last May, in Cleveland, Rabbi Jon Adland of Temple Israel in Canton, Jean Sarlson and Drs. Cheryl and Mickey Weinstein accepted Partners In Care Awards from Planned Parenthood.

These are just a few examples of the great support Planned Parenthood has found among members of the Jewish faith. Yet, when it comes time to decide whether it should distance itself from a clearly anti-Semitic organization, with ties to Louis Farrakhan, or pursuing a political agenda, Planned Parenthood chooses the political agenda.

The question is, how will Jewish leaders in America respond to Planned Parenthood throwing them under the bus?

Planned Parenthood's Billboard Campaign in Iowa

Planned Parenthood is always struggling to make its killing of human beings by abortion into something viewed as just a normal activity. Back in the 1970s, Planned Parenthood tried to get the writers at Children’s Television Workshop (creators of Sesame Street) to include the word abortion in a number of episodes to normalize the word and make it more acceptable. Fortunately, this did not happen.

But, Planned Parenthood has never abandoned its “need” to make abortion acceptable and has engaged in many campaigns to make this happen. Its latest thrust, unveiled in Iowa on January 4, 2019, is to have billboards around that state feature mothers who have aborted their child and encourage others to also tell their abortion stories. 

Dr. Jill Meadows, medical director for Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, described the “Say Abortion” campaign this way: “We are amplifying the voices of real people who have had abortions, we are talking about abortion care out loud, and we are shifting the narrative so all people can talk openly about abortion with sensitivity to the complexity of real-life individual experiences.” 

According to Dr. Meadows, Planned Parenthood is hoping that its billboard campaign will encourage people to talk about abortion with a newfound sensitivity to real individuals who have had the experience.

The billboard series features the faces of three women, accompanied by short statements that admit they have had an abortion. The messages all read “I had an abortion” and end with “and I am not apologizing” or “and I am not ashamed” or “and it was just health care.”

Our friend, Jenifer Bowen, founder and president of Right Life Action in Iowa, issued the following statement about the “Say Abortion” campaign: 

Iowa's shrinking abortion chain, Planned Parenthood, just released a "#SayAbortion" campaign across Iowa.

With abortion rates tumbling more than 51% in the past ten years and 21 Planned Parenthood centers closing between 2010-2017, they are clearly attempting to drive back up their sagging #abortion business.

According to their press release, "#SayAbortion billboards are currently posted in Des Moines at Fleur Drive and Wakonda View and SE 14th Street and Indianola Road. Additional billboards will be posted this month in Ames, Cedar Falls, Cedar Rapids, Council Bluffs and Iowa City."

Certainly they are free to spend money on billboards and hashtag campaigns, but we predict this will backfire as the majority of Iowans acknowledge that every abortion is the intentional killing of an unborn child.

As you consider this desperate campaign by Planned Parenthood in Iowa, it is interesting to note that the Planned Parenthood affiliate in Iowa was the one that “invented” webcam abortions. Planned Parenthood president refreshingly honest

Okay. Here is the situation. Planned Parenthood’s new president, Dr. Leana Wen, has been doing lots of interviews since she took office in November. As we’ve commented in previous stories, she seems to have the Planned Parenthood public relations line down pat. 

She recently did an interview with and the website wrote a piece headlined “Planned Parenthood’s New President Wants To Focus On Nonabortion Health Care.” The first line stated: “The organization is still committed to providing abortions and reproductive care but Wen, the first female physician to run Planned Parenthood, is embarking on a cross-country listening tour to learn how best add or expand nonabortion services.”

You can read the entire article, but the point of it was captured in the headline and lead sentence. Unlike Cecile Richards, Planned Parenthood is pushing itself as a health-care organization that happens to do abortions as part of that health care.

There was nothing startling or very new here. But it seems that there were people within the Planned Parenthood organization that were not happy with the article—people who do not want Planned Parenthood to ever stop killing as many babies as possible, and they must have demanded that Dr. Wen clarify things.

The BuzzFeed article ran on January 7, 2019, at 5:05 PM (Eastern). By 10:31 AM the next day, Dr. Wen was on Twitter trying to correct her mistake. Referring to the BuzzFeed article, she first tweeted: “I am always happy to do interviews, but these headlines completely misconstrue my vision for Planned Parenthood.” Then she stated“First, our core mission is providing, protecting and expanding access to abortion and reproductive health care. We will never back down from that fightit’s a fundamental human right and women’s lives are at stake.”

You got that? Despite Dr. Wen’s flowery language in interviews or when she is on stage, there is a core mission at Planned Parenthood that those who actually control the organization will not tolerate being violated. That core mission is “providing, protecting and expanding access to abortion.”

Every person who fights against Planned Parenthood should make a poster or sign with these words emblazoned for all to see.

Of course, we’ve known all along that this is clearly the core mission of Planned Parenthood, but to have its president state it so clearly is refreshing.

Preview of our 2018 Planned Parenthood Facilities Report

At the end of every year, American Life League’s STOPP International program issues a detailed report on the state of all Planned Parenthood medical facilities in the United States. We have finished the data collection and preliminary analysis of the 2018 report and will be releasing it to the public within the next 10 days. As subscribers to the Wednesday STOPP Report, we bring you advanced information on what will be in the report.

First, we are happy to report that, for the last 13 years in a row (including 2018), Planned Parenthood ended the year with fewer physical facilities than at the beginning of the year. This year, Planned Parenthood closed 11 separate clinics in a total of 11 states. This demonstrates that the effective battle against Planned Parenthood is spread all over the country and not consolidated in just one or two areas. The 11 states that saw Planned Parenthood closures were: AZ (Tucson), CA (Napa), CT (New Britain), FL (Orlando), IA (Bettendorf), IN (Fort Wayne), MI (Livonia), NJ (Ewing), NY (Niagara Falls/Wheaton), OK (Warr Acres), and OR (Cottage Grove).

We are also happy to report that, for the second year in a row, Planned Parenthood operates no medical facilities in North Dakota or Wyoming.

The total number of Planned Parenthood medical facilities in the United States is 590. That is 348 less than it was in 1995. Of course, it is the hard work and prayers of all of you reading this WSR that brought about the tremendous drop in Planned Parenthood locations. The drop in Planned Parenthood locations is a major contributing factor in the continuing drop in the number of surgical and medication abortions in the United States. It is estimated that 51,852 preborn lives will be saved in the country in 2019 just due to the closing of these 348 Planned Parenthood facilities.

Planned Parenthood continued its focus on abortion in 2018. Although it closed 11 facilities, the number of its clinics that commit surgical or medical abortions rose by four to a total of 360. This means that Planned Parenthood commits these abortions at six of every 10 of its facilities. Because of sheer numbers, we have always maintained that Planned Parenthood operates the largest abortion chain in the nation. In 2018, due to the closure of many independent abortions facilities, Planned Parenthood actually operates more surgical and medication abortion facilities than the combined total of all other abortion mills in the country.

So, while we thank God for the many victories we’ve witnessed and the falling number of Planned Parenthood locations, we know that there is much work ahead of us. There are still 590 Planned Parenthood locations out there and our objective is to close down every one of them.
