Two PP presidents fired 24 years apart for same reason

By Jim Sedlak

Major news in the Planned Parenthood world over the last two weeks has been the abrupt firing of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America president, Dr. Leana Wen, on Tuesday, July 16. There has been a great deal of discussion and commentary in the press, and elsewhere, on the firing and what brought it about. All different kinds of explanations have been offered. Our own reaction included pointing people back to what we wrote in the September 26, 2018 Wednesday STOPP Report immediately after it was announced that Wen would become the new president. In that article, we compared Wen with the last medical professional who was president of PPFA, Pamela Maraldo, PhD, RN, and predicted Wen would not last very long as president.

Since the firing, both Wen and Maraldo have made public statements. Maraldo did an interview on National Public Radio on July 20, and Wen wrote an op-ed in the New York Times on Sunday, July 21. Let’s look at what they’ve said.

First, I want to be absolutely clear. Both Wen and Maraldo see the killing of preborn children as part of what they call “health care.” Thus, when either of them talks about health care, they include abortion, which is absolutely insane.

Wen has enumerated four reasons why her ideas and philosophies were not readily accepted at Planned Parenthood:

  1. She tried to prioritize health care issues by increasing “care for women before, during and after pregnancies, and to enhance critically needed services like mental health and addiction treatment.”
  2. She “worked to change the perception that Planned Parenthood was just a progressive political entity and show that it was first and foremost a mainstream health care organization.”
  3. She brought in a team comprised of experts in public health and health policy. These experts “faced daily internal opposition.”
  4. Long-term Planned Parenthood employees and, eventually, the board “saw my goals as mission creep.”

Wen summed up everything: “But in the end, I was asked to leave for the same reason I was hired: I was changing the direction of Planned Parenthood.”

Pamela Maraldo, PhD, RN, was president of Planned Parenthood from 1993 to 1995. She took over as head of Planned Parenthood right after the election of President Bill Clinton. The country was bracing for universal health care and Maraldo said, at the time, that she placed her "emphasis on reshaping Planned Parenthood into a broad health organization that could compete in the era of managed care." She was met with internal dissent, as Planned Parenthood affiliates felt that focus would diminish Planned Parenthood’s role as advocates for abortion rights and low-income women's access to health care.

In the interview with NPR, Maraldo was asked if she believed, based on facts that are known, if Planned Parenthood’s firing of Dr. Leana Wen after only eight months as president of the organization reflected the same reason she was let go. Maraldo said yes. Maraldo said that, 24 years later, she would still do what she did back then. Maraldo also said that she believes any health-care professional, like Dr. Wen, would also do the same thing.

It seems that every quarter-century, Planned Parenthood gets the idea that it would be nice to have a medical professional as its president. It goes out and hires one that will support the killing of preborn babies. Then, it realizes quickly that it really didn’t mean to do that. It quickly gets rid of that president and goes back to its political ways.

The statements of Maraldo and Wen should clearly let everyone know that Planned Parenthood is NOT a health care organization, as it claims, but is a political organization wedded to a desire to kill as many babies as possible.

Planned Parenthood comings and goings

Going: Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund have fired Dr. Leana Wen from her positions of president of the two organizations. Although there is much speculation on exactly why, Dr. Wen basically says it is because of her handling of the defense of abortion. Wen wanted to promote abortion as a necessary health-care procedure, while the Planned Parenthood board wanted abortion treated as a political issue.

Coming: Alexis McGill Johnson is now the Acting President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund. According to Planned Parenthood, “Johnson is a social justice leader, lifelong political organizer and a tireless advocate for reproductive rights. She served on the Board of Directors for Planned Parenthood Action Fund for nearly a decade, including serving as Board Chair from 2013 to 2015 where she expanded the organization’s philanthropic reach to fund critical initiatives. She holds degrees from Princeton and Yale Universities and has taught political science at both Yale and Wesleyan Universities.”

Going/Coming: Planned Parenthood Great Plains has announced the replacement of its facility in Little Rock (AR) with a newer facility in the same city.

Going/Coming: Planned Parenthood South Atlantic is opening a new, expanded, facility in Charlotte, NC. The new 10,626 square-foot mega center will commit abortions and replace a smaller facility in the same city. There is a huge outrage in the city because the new killing center is in a historically black neighborhood of Charlotte, about a mile away from St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Going: Planned Parenthood Great Plains previously announced the closing of its Fayetteville (AR) facility at the end of July. PPGP says it is seeking a location for a new facility in “northwest Arkansas.”

Going: Planned Parenthood of Indiana and Kentucky announced the closing of its Seymour (IN) facility. Customers are being referred to its Columbus (IN) facility.

Coming: Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains has revealed its expansion plans. According to published reports, PPRM, which already has 18 centers in Colorado and four in New Mexico, is seriously looking into opening new abortion facilities in Grand Junction (CO) and Las Cruces (NM).

When STOPP contacted Mark Cavaliere, spokesperson for the Southwest Coalition for Life about PPRM possibly opening in Las Cruces, he said: “In 2014, the Texas-based abortion chain, "Whole Woman's Health," celebrated their expansion into New Mexico, one of seven states with absolutely no restrictions on abortion whatsoever, which they counted on to help facilitate their agenda without the so-called ‘oppressive regulations’ of their home state. What they didn't count on, however, was the faithful community of Las Cruces showing up in peaceful prayer and fasting on their sidewalk even before their doors opened, and not leaving until they closed permanently and unceremoniously just 27 months later. Las Cruces means "The City of the Crosses" and the Body of Christ showed up to ensure our community remained worthy of its name, in spite of the lack of any laws or regulations on our side. Since then, that spark in Las Cruces has been fanned into a wildfire of pro-life unity across the entire Borderland region of Southern New Mexico and West Texas. If Planned Parenthood—an even more controversial abortion chain, with their ever-growing scandals of mismanagement and ill repute—is naive, foolish, or desperate enough to make the same mistake, they're in for a response unlike anything they've encountered before. The church is ready.”

David Daleiden update

The Thomas More Society, who is representing David Daleiden in defending against the numerous charges David still faces in California, sent their attorneys back to the courtroom with him on July 17th . . . On that day, the judge heard Daleiden’s motion for summary judgment in the Planned Parenthood civil case. At the same time, he heard Planned Parenthood’s motion for summary judgment against David. Any claims or defenses disposed of during that summary judgment proceeding will not be part of any jury trial before Judge Orrick. That jury trial remains scheduled for September 30, right on the heels of the criminal preliminary hearing now set to begin before Judge Hite in San Francisco criminal court on September 3, the day after Labor Day.”

Following that July 17 court date, David sent the following message:

I have some VERY good news out of California for you. Yesterday evening, Judge Orrick in San Francisco federal court (!) indicated that he will eviscerate Planned Parenthood's retaliatory lawsuit against The Center for Medical Progress for the undercover videos of Planned Parenthood leadership selling baby body parts.

Now that all the evidence and testimony is in, even Planned Parenthood's favorite judge is refusing to buy into Planned Parenthood's false smears about my work and intentions. Based on the First Amendment, he issued a tentative ruling, which he instructed the parties to treat as substantially final, blocking all damages charges PP was seeking based on alleged "threats" and reactions from third parties after the videos were published.

This is a huge victory insofar as it reduces the case from a potentially $20 Million issue to as little as $100k. It is an even bigger victory for the First Amendment rights of all citizen journalists and activists because it reaffirms that free speakers cannot be held liable for alleged bad actions by others in the free marketplace of ideas. – David

This case is far from over and we must keep David and all the other defendants in our prayers as we thank God for this initial victory.

Planned Parenthood losing $60 million

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, generally considered the most liberal appeals court in the country, voted 7-4 in July to allow the Trump administration to enforce new Title X regulations (see March-April 2019 ALL NEWS) that will keep about $60 million a year from Planned Parenthood. It did that because it believes it is likely the Supreme Court —based on a previous Rust v Sullivancase—will uphold the new rules.

After the court decision, the Trump administration first announced that the section of the rules prohibiting Title X money from going to organizations that perform or refer for abortions would go into effect immediately. However, after PP and others complained that they needed a clear statement on what they were allowed to say to women and what they could not say, the administration said the rules would go into effect on September 19.

Predictably, Planned Parenthood went ballistic. Its (now former) president, Leana Wen, exclaimed, that the ruling is “devastating news for the millions of people who rely on Title X.”

The Kaiser Family Foundation looked at the facts of what percentage of Title X clinics are either run by Planned Parenthood or other abortion providers. KFF shows that Wen was exaggerating. Some 16 states do not have a single Title X clinic that is run by PP. In another 11 states, less than 10 percent of the Title clinics are run by PP. That’s a majority (27) of the states where these new rules will have zero or very little impact. The only states to see a major impact from these rules will be Alaska, Vermont, and Utah—states that have allowed PP to dominate the Title X industry.

Of course, Planned Parenthood’s propaganda machine will not make these facts known. It will simply cry about the $60 million it may lose and get states and private individuals and corporations to give it more money.

Planned Parenthood has said it will not change what it is doing and will forfeit the Title X money rather than end its baby-killing business.

When these Protect Life Rules take effect, the American public will have spoken and Planned Parenthood will lose a huge amount of taxpayer money. Praise God!
