It seems we have become so accustomed to today’s world of make-believe that we no longer notice that Planned Parenthood frames its anti-life mission in terms of healthcare with not so much as an eyebrow raised in objection. That point has really been brought home during the recent elections and in the research phase for our annual report on Planned Parenthood CEO salaries.

Compiling the data for the report means we examine every Planned Parenthood affiliate website, including videos, mission statements, tax documents, news reports, and more. With each review, I am taken aback by the amount of money that Planned Parenthood affiliates amass and the amounts they pay their top executives. Their verbal gymnastics and pie-in-the-sky promises that are thrown around in attempt to whitewash the evil that they promulgate day in and day out know no boundaries.

For example, today I’m looking at an affiliate that grossed over $74 million in its latest annual reporting period. Seventy-four million dollars in one year. Let that sink in. The CEO salary was $445,591. That puts her in the top 99 percentile of US earners.

The briefly stated mission of the affiliate is: “To support lifelong sexual health and foster a community where every child is a wanted child.”

What have this Planned Parenthood CEO and affiliate done, we ask, to fulfill its mission?

The affiliate’s immediate sphere of influence included Alaska, Hawai’i, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, and western Washington—the largest geographical area of any PP affiliate. The PP affiliate reports 32,603 abortions/abortion-related visits in 2020. It includes 35 facilities in the six-state area.

It opened an abortion facility in Honolulu in 2019, the same year it reported paying a construction contractor in Honolulu $3.7 million. Planned Parenthood operates two of the three abortion facilities in Hawai’i. In Honolulu, PP commits abortion until the beginning of the 20th week of pregnancy—well into the second trimester.

With the average cost of a first trimester Planned Parenthood abortion at $600, and second trimester abortions running $750 up to $2000, that could very conservatively mean $20 million was generated directly by the abortion side of this one affiliate’s business.

In reality, Planned Parenthood is attempting to make every child as disposable as yesterday’s garbage. If PP truly could make every child a wanted child, it would obviously be grossly economically at odds with its own bottom line. It is a historical fact that when Planned Parenthood affiliates do not remain profitable, they are shut down. Follow the money trail and you will see where Planned Parenthood’s priorities lie.

The same affiliate, part of the largest abortion chain in the US, boasts of reaching almost 9,000 youth annually through peer training. That is just the tip of the iceberg of its outreach to children and youth.

Contrary to its actions now, protecting children and teens from the decline and chaos that befalls those who are involved in Planned Parenthood-style sexual pleasure training, contraception, and abortion from an early age would be a very good starting point for providing real lifelong sexual health training.

This Planned Parenthood affiliate also serves up gender-bending steroids, which it refers to as “gender-affirming” hormones. In reality, these steroidal hormones do the opposite of affirming genetically determined sex identity (intentionally misidentified by PP as “gender assigned at birth”). They truly are intended to throw normally functioning sexual development into confusion and chaos.

In this Advent season as we await the birth of birth of the Christ Child at Christmas, we would do well to meditate upon the words of St. John Paul II from the Gospel of Life (1995):

At the dawn of salvation, it is the Birth of a Child which is proclaimed as joyful news: “I bring you good news of a great joy which will come to all the people; for to you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord” (Lk 2:10-11). The source of this “great joy” is the Birth of the Saviour; but Christmas also reveals the full meaning of every human birth, and the joy which accompanies the Birth of the Messiah is thus seen to be the foundation and fulfilment of joy at every child born into the world (cf. Jn 16:21).

Planned Parenthood’s framing of abortion as a basic human right and its efforts to codify that right in law is the exact opposite of truth and a denial of justice for the least among us.

And yet, it manages to enforce this unbridled barbarism on society today, even in a post Roe v. Wade world, as it has for almost 50 years.

St. John Paul goes on in his Gospel of Life to ask:

“How is it still possible to speak of the dignity of every human person when the killing of the weakest and most innocent is permitted? In the name of what justice is the most unjust of discriminations practiced: some individuals are held to be deserving of defense and others are denied that dignity?” When this happens, the process leading to the breakdown of a genuinely human coexistence and the disintegration of the state itself has already begun.

To claim the right to abortion, infanticide and euthanasia, and to recognize that right in law, means to attribute to human freedom a perverse and evil significance: that of an absolute power over others and against others. This is the death of true freedom.

In October, Colorado Public Radio reported that wait times for abortions in Colorado have increased dramatically following the downfall of Roe v. Wade and the subsequent restrictions placed on abortion in states like Texas, Oklahoma, and Missouri.

CPR’s coverage included a quote from abortionist Nancy Fang in Denver regarding her testimony before the Colorado legislature in favor of the Reproductive Health Equity Act, guaranteeing abortion access in Colorado—an attempt that was successful. Fang said, “I feel like I’m a part of Colorado history and protecting the right to access abortion. . . . But on the other side, it feels strange that we have to do that through legislation. This is just part of everyday health care that everyone should have access to.”

How can anyone who decapitates, dismembers, and otherwise brutally takes the lives of tiny babies on a regular basis consider their evil acts of aggression upon the innocent “everyday health care”?

And now, Kaiser Permanente has decided it will “offer abortion services” in Colorado as part of its everyday healthcare to allay longer waiting times for abortions at Planned Parenthood. “This is the choice that the woman makes and we are there for them and support them and we take care of them,” according to an unidentified Denver area Kaiser Permanente employee.

Since when do we take care of mothers by killing their babies in our medical facilities? Women in crisis situations need real help—the kind pregnancy help centers provide—not abortion.

It is a particularly chilling decision, especially when you realize that Kaiser Permanente is the “largest nonprofit health plan and integrated health care organization in the state, serving 509,773 members through 41 medical offices and a network of affiliated hospitals.”

As ALL’s Judie Brown writes this week in her excellent commentary Abortion and the Dead Conscience, “The fact that an actual baby dies during an abortion barely registers on the awareness screen these days. . . . Without a properly formed conscience, the destabilizing result that leads to killing the innocent by calling it choice persists. The blood of the innocent is the toll exacted by noisy purveyors of evil. Thus it is that the conscience is deadened, and the bodies pile up.”

One of the great risks of living in a state where abortion has been highly restricted following the Dobbs ruling is that we want to think abortion has ended in our state and it is time to kick back and relax. In reality, women are traveling to adjoining states where abortion is still very accessible. They are taking advantage of loopholes and still having abortions in our own states. They are ordering abortion pills by mail, with or without the use of telemedicine.

Planned Parenthood is pushing its sexual pleasure curricula harder than ever. It is directing women to states where abortion is unrestricted and funneling money to them through abortion funds. It is running a well-oiled, extremely well-funded political machine to elect pro-abortion candidates on the local, state, and federal levels.

In addition, during an interview Planned Parenthood in Tennessee recently revealed plans for getting deep into the grassroots to sow trust among people who disagree with them. It’s one of the oldest plays in the PP playbook, to try to engage the enemy with the “we are more alike than we are different conversation,” to sidetrack them and trick them into thinking Planned Parenthood is not so bad after all.

Ashley Coffield, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Tennessee and North Mississippi, unveiled her plan for survival in a media interview, saying, “We’re looking at more of a relational organizing model, where we are having deep and meaningful conversations about shared values with people we’ve never talked to before. And we’re encouraging our supporters to do the same. And, we ultimately have a goal of having what we call action councils in all 95 counties in Tennessee, and those are grassroots-driven, organizing bodies that take a part of the movement that they’re interested in.”

It is more vital than ever that our Church leadership and members step up and continue to teach and speak about the humanity of the preborn, the reality that a baby dies in every abortion, and the real freedom and joy that are found by following a well-formed conscience.

If you see that this is not happening in your church, your community, or your diocese, it is time to speak up about it now. Contact your pastor, your parish council, your bishop, or whoever needs to hear the message and let them know that Planned Parenthood is not sleeping—its staff are proselytizing! PP’s religion is abortion and sexual license, and it never stops. It has unlimited funds in the form of huge donations. The Church—the full body of Christ—needs to be there among the faithful and other community members, helping form consciences that are not easily distracted or fooled by the noise of the purveyors of evil. Engaging with evil is a dangerous waste of time. Our job is to build strong families and help inform consciences so that evil is universally recognized for what it is.

The day before Thanksgiving, a Shawnee County district judge cleared the way for telemed abortions, tossing a 2011 law prohibiting them to the dustbin.

The Center for Reproductive Rights president promised to continue fighting to expand telemed abortions across the nation. Unsurprisingly, touting abortion as a fundamental right and abortion as respect for patients, Planned Parenthood applauded the move, saying: “As other states further restrict care and violate citizens’ fundamental rights, Kansas remains a place that respects patients.”

It is yet another example of the noisy purveyors of evil, working to deaden consciences.
